THE SITUATION
A Radicon 130.96:1 caster car quadruple reduction gearbox was removed from service at a Steel Works and sent to our workshop for a comprehensive inspection and refurbishment. Once stripped down, several areas of wear and damage were identified, including wear to the input shaft seal journal, damaged output seal sleeves, and pitting across several stages of the gear train. The gearbox required a thorough overhaul to restore its condition and prepare it for a reliable return to service.
THE SOLUTION
Our engineering team carried out a complete refurbishment of the gearbox. A Speedi-Sleeve repair was applied to the worn input shaft, while new extended-length output seal sleeves were manufactured to replace the damaged components. The damaged dipstick housing was repaired and missing lifting eyebolts were replaced. All bearings and seals were renewed, while the gear teeth were carefully dressed and polished to address the identified pitting and wear. Once all remedial work was complete, the gearbox was carefully reassembled and tested in our workshop.
THE RESULT
Following the rebuild and testing process, the Radicon 130.96:1 gearbox was successfully restored and returned ready for service. The overhaul addressed multiple areas of mechanical wear while retaining and restoring serviceable components, providing the Steel Works with a refurbished gearbox prepared to return to its demanding caster car application.
